It is amazing how a few words on a page can engage and inspire a buyer to make a purchase that they otherwise would have passed up. However, when sales letters are written poorly, not only will they not be effective for your current campaign, but you also run the risk of damaging the reputation of your company.

While there is a plethora of information written on the topic of writing sales letters, many marketers continue to make the same mistakes repeatedly. These common errors can drive away potential customers, and even create a situation where they immediately dismiss further communications from you.

* Writing weak headlines - The first thing that catches the eye of your reader is your headline. Make a powerful statement here, or your potential customer may never make it to the first paragraph.

* Being overly formal - While spelling is important to your credibility, sticking too closely to the classic rules of grammar can do more harm than good. Make your tone more conversational and avoid using large, uncommon words. Customers like straight talk.

* Not using white space - Long blocks of words on a page will intimidate your potential buyer and make it seems as if there is too much information to digest. Break up text into smaller paragraphs, leaving plenty of white space.

* Leaving them hanging - Once a customer has been intrigued by the powerful and persuasive words you have used, they need to know what to do next. Leave contact information, or specific instructions on how they can take advantage of your offer. They will not track you down for themselves.

Once you understand the potential pitfalls of writing a sales letter, you are much more likely to create a professional and effective business document that will convert readers to customers. Sales letters can be a dynamic marketing tool that can take your business from mediocre to thriving, with just the right words. However, they must be written correctly to do their job properly.
